The Dimensity 1080 is a new chip from MediaTek that will be used in low-cost smartphones. It’s the company’s follow-up to the Dimensity 920, which came out last year and powered mid-range phones like the Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge and the Realme 9 Pro+. MediaTek wants to power all kinds of phones, from cheap ones to top-of-the-line ones, and doesn’t plan to stop any time soon. The MediaTek Dimensity 1080 is much better than the Dimensity 920 in terms of performance, efficiency, and camera capabilities. It is a 5G chip made on the N6 6nm manufacturing node at TSMC. The SoC has the same octa-core setup as its predecessor: two ARM Cortex-A78 cores that can run at up to 2.6GHz and six ARM Cortex-A55 cores that can run at up to 2GHz.
Only the two main cores of 1080 are 100MHz faster than those of 920. (up from 2.5GHz). The GPU, ARM Mali-G68, stays the same. It works with UFS 3.1 storage modules and LPDDR5 RAM. HyperEngine 3.0, sub-6GHz 5G connectivity, 120Hz screen support, Wi-Fi 6, and the same APU are all things that the Dimensity 1080 has in common with the 920. (AI Processing Unit).

Except for the 100MHz boost to the core, the 1080’s specs are almost the same as those of the Dimensity 980. But on its latest Dimensity chipset. The company has completely changed how the camera set up. With the Imagiq ISP, it can process images from sensors with up to 200MP (up from 108MP), which is becoming more common on flagship phones these days. MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chipset came out with support for 200MP cameras in cheap smartphones.
Its ISP (Image Signal Processor) lets it push hardware-accelerated HDR video up to 4K resolution. A quad-camera setup, HDR10+ support, and, of course, up to 200MP image capture with no shutter lag.
The company says that smartphones with MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chips will be available in the fourth quarter of 2022. In the next few months, you can expect to see the latest MediTek chips on affordable phones from companies like Realme, Xiaomi, and others.
