Jio 5G
The company’s telco division, Reliance Jio, has plans to roll out 5G in India. These plans were revealed in Reliance Industries’ annual report, which came out on Saturday. According to a report, Jio has finished planning its 5G network for the top 1,000 cities in India. It has named 22 cities that will get 5G in the first phase. Using heat maps, 3D maps, and ray tracing, coverage planning was based on how clients were likely to use the network and how much money they could make. At a spectrum auction that just ended, Reliance Jio was the highest bidder and won the premium 700MHz band, which is said to give better coverage with fewer towers. After the auction, Jio’s new chairman, Akash Ambani, said that the company would celebrate the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” with the rollout of 5G, which could mean that services will be available all over the country in August.
At the 5G spectrum auction, the Indian government got bids totalling Rs 1.5 lakh crore, 71% of the total 5G spectrum that was up for bid. Reliance Jio spent the most money at the 5G spectrum auction. The telecom company spent Rs 88,078 crore to buy 24,740MHz of 5G spectrum rights. It can now use spectrum in the 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz bands.
During last month’s quarterly results call, RIL President Kiran Thomas said that the company had chosen nine cities for the initial rollout. These cities are Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Jamnagar, Hyderabad, and Lucknow. The many 5G tests done in these cities were another reason they were chosen. On top of that, Jio’s 5G services will be based on the company’s own 5G stack.
Jio has also teamed up with the University of Oulu in Finland. Which is in charge of the world’s first major 6G research programme, to speed up research and standardisation in 6G.
The Department of Telecom thinks that the download speeds of 5G technology will be ten times faster than those of 4G. But these speed improvements will cost more. Experts in the industry say that 5G data plans will cost at least 30% more than 4G data plans now.
Airtel has also shared its plans for 5G services in the country, which you can learn more about here.
